Laufey Gameplay and Combat

In God of War Laufey, Faye fights with a sword guarded by Rue's ribbons, soul magic that knocks a foe's soul out of its body, and the two-mode Serpent Bow, faster and more airborne than Kratos. All of it comes from official material and the Jun 2, 2026 footage of a pre-release build.

Faye fights in God of War Laufey with three tools: a sword whose guardian, Rue, extends her ribbons to strike distant enemies; soul magic from her golden palm, which can knock a foe's soul clean out of its body; and the Serpent Bow, revealed on Sep 28, 2026, with a precision mode and a hip-fire mode. The camera sits over her shoulder as in the Norse games, but she is faster and more agile than Kratos and fights in the air as much as on the ground. Santa Monica Studio describes the result as the modern God of War combat system blended with the mobility of the classic Greek saga. Everything on this page is either official material from the studio and PlayStation or what the Jun 2, 2026 State of Play footage of a pre-release build showed; as of Nov 4, 2026 no one outside the studio has played the game, and details may change before May 20, 2027. The clip is IGN's upload of the official combat first look, with Santa Monica Studio's designers.

How does combat work in God of War Laufey?

The studio's own summary (official material): combat is "intimate and brutal", exploration of a rich world and story sit at its core, and "Right from the start, we knew Laufey needed to contain all the core elements that define a God of War game." Faye moves between ground and air without stopping the action, in a style built on speed, control and relentless momentum. PlayStation's page adds Jötnar magic to the mix.

What the reveal footage showed (Jun 2, 2026, pre-release build): Game Informer describes Faye fighting with a sword in one hand while blocking with magic in the other, and launching enemies upward for air juggles. Kotaku saw her cross ruins and cut down enemies before two armored foes seized her and her blade shattered on their armor, a story beat rather than a mechanic. The clip is IGN's upload of the Jun 2, 2026 gameplay reveal.

Faye's sword and Rue

The sword is not Faye's at the start. In the studio's telling (official material), she is the former owner of the Leviathan Axe, and that history wins the trust of Rue, the sword's guardian, so she can use the blade to escape imprisonment. Rue is a set of sentient ribbons tied to the hilt that can speak and fight. In the reveal footage, the ribbons extend during strikes to hit distant enemies, which gives a one-handed sword some of the reach the chained Blades of Chaos gave Kratos. Phranque the cube, who had the sword stuck in him, helps her take it back. Both companions are on Phranque and Rue.

Seen over Faye's shoulder, a long sword with purple ribbons in her hand, a horned beast covered in fire strides toward her between pools of flame.

What is soul magic in God of War Laufey?

Faye's signature power. The PlayStation Blog (official material): "In the Everywhen, Faye can strike her golden palm at a foe with such force it detaches their soul from their body." Once the soul is out, she can attack it directly or knock it into other enemies. Her soul powers are greatly amplified in The Everywhen, the afterlife where the game takes place. The same golden palm is behind her title, the "Golden Hand of the Jötnar". How soul magic is charged, upgraded or limited has not been detailed as of Nov 4, 2026.

The Serpent Bow

Faye's second weapon was revealed on Sep 28, 2026 with the pre-order announcement. The PlayStation Blog calls it "An enchanted bow with the shifting form of a serpent", which moves from dormant to notched very quickly, so that arrows can be woven into her sword and magic attacks. Game Informer calls it "the Serpent's Bow"; this viki uses the studio's spelling.

From behind, Faye aims a bow with a bright arrow at fiery orange creatures leaping and flying toward her, a pagoda-like temple on the cliffs beyond.

Mode How it is used What it does
Precision Full aim More accuracy and draw distance; stacks up to five arrows for a volley; Phranque can launch enemies skyward
Hip-fire Half aim A mobile stance that fires a cluster of arrows for close-range damage

Source: PlayStation Blog, Sep 28, 2026 (official material).

The bow has three arrow types, rapid fire, explosive and multi-target, and charged precision shots hit weak points and can hinder an enemy's movement and offense. Serpent Scales change the bow's look and add a perk, and unlockable skills widen its moves. No footage of the bow in a full fight had been shown as of Nov 4, 2026 beyond the official reveal material.

Aerial combat

Faye fights in the air. The studio says she moves between ground and air without stopping the action (official material), and the reveal footage shows her launching enemies for juggles (pre-release build). With the bow, Phranque can throw enemies skyward for precision shots. Game Informer singles this out as the difference from Kratos in the Norse games, and PlayStation names the classic Greek games as the model for her mobility.

Gear and customization

The official list (Sep 28, 2026): armor sets with their own perks, stats and looks, and Faye's Blade, Scales and Catalyst can each be customized. The pre-order bonus Last Wish Armor Set and the Digital Deluxe Edition's Dark Alchemy Armor Set, Blade, Bow Scales and Catalyst are examples of each slot; see Laufey Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses. What a Catalyst does in play, how skills are earned, and whether there is a level or skill tree like Ragnarok's have not been explained.

Exploration

The studio puts exploration "of a rich world" at the core of the game, and says Faye must uncover the Everywhen's hidden truths to find her way home. Beyond that, nothing about the map, puzzles, side quests or collectibles has been shown as of Nov 4, 2026. The reveal footage moved through a forest and ruins, and Faye talked with Phranque along the way (pre-release build). The clip is IGN's upload of the Jun 2, 2026 gameplay reveal.

How is Faye's combat different from Kratos's?

Greek games (2005 to 2013) God of War (2018) and Ragnarok God of War Laufey
Hero Kratos Kratos, with Atreus Faye, with Phranque and Rue
Camera Fixed Over the shoulder Over the shoulder
Main weapons Blades of Chaos on chains Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, Guardian Shield; Draupnir Spear in Ragnarok Sword with Rue's ribbons, Serpent Bow
Magic Magic from the gods Runic attacks Soul magic from her golden palm
Movement Jumps and a right-stick roll Slower than Faye, in Game Informer's comparison Fast, ground to air, juggles
Ranged attacks Magic Atreus's bow Faye's own bow

In the Greek games Kratos fought from a fixed camera with the Blades of Chaos seared to his arms by chains, light and heavy attacks on square and triangle, and red orbs to buy new combos. God of War (2018) brought the camera behind his shoulder and gave him the Leviathan Axe, once Faye's, with Atreus fighting beside him with a bow; Ragnarok added new Runic abilities and the Draupnir Spear. Laufey keeps the Norse camera but hands the bow to the hero herself, trades the axe's weight for a sword's speed, and reaches back to the mobility PlayStation credits to the Greek era. Every weapon in the series is on Weapons.

What is not known yet

As of Nov 4, 2026: difficulty settings, accessibility options, the skill tree, how magic is limited, whether there is a rage mode like Kratos's Spartan Rage, enemy variety, bosses, how companions are commanded in a fight, and how long the game is. Santa Monica Studio has promised more updates before May 20, 2027; see Laufey Release Date and God of War Laufey.
