Faye (Laufey) is Kratos's wife and Atreus's mother in God of War, a giant whose death opens God of War (2018) and the hero of God of War Laufey, out on PS5 on May 20, 2027. Deborah Ann Woll plays her.

Faye (Laufey) is Kratos's second wife and Atreus's mother, the woman whose ashes Kratos and Atreus carry through God of War (2018), and the playable hero of God of War Laufey, Santa Monica Studio's PS5 game due on May 20, 2027 after a delay announced on Nov 4, 2026. Her funeral pyre is the first scene of the 2018 game; Laufey begins at that same pyre, when she wakes in The Everywhen, "the afterlife of the gods", and finds the plans she made to protect her family at risk. Deborah Ann Woll plays her, as she did in God of War Ragnarok. The clip is PlayStation's Sep 29, 2026 pre-order trailer for Laufey.

Who is Faye in God of War?

The 2018 game opens after her death. Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter her ashes from the highest point in Jotunheim, the realm of the giants, and the journey is the whole story of the game (SVG). God of War (2018) never says how she died (Kotaku). Santa Monica Studio describes her as "a legendary warrior and leader" whose mark was on the Nine Realms "long before she ever met Kratos".

Faye's secret in God of War (2018)

In Jotunheim, murals reveal that Faye was a giant named Laufey, that "Faye" is short for Laufey, and that the giants called her son Loki (SVG). She had foreseen the journey: she marked the route to Jotunheim and broke the protective spell on the family's home, so the trip Kratos and Atreus believed was a last wish was also a plan. The God of War (2018) Story page tells it in order.

The Golden Hand of the Jötnar

Laufey's makers give Faye a past of her own. As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar she was "the most powerful protector of the Giants", and the studio says she proved equal to Thor. She was also the previous owner of the Leviathan Axe, the weapon Kratos carries in the Norse games (PlayStation Blog); see Weapons. In the clip, MojoPlays sums up her past as the Golden Hand.

Faye in God of War Ragnarok

She appears only in flashbacks in God of War Ragnarok (Kotaku). One shrine in that game shows Faye destroying an earlier prophetic shrine, which Den of Geek reads as her wish for her family to choose their own path (Den of Geek). PlayStation says Woll was "reprising her role from God of War Ragnarok" when she took the lead in Laufey (PlayStation Blog).

Faye as the hero of God of War Laufey

Laufey is the first mainline God of War game whose hero is not Kratos (Game Informer). Its footage, from a pre-release build shown at the State of Play of Jun 2, 2026, opens on her body burning on the pyre; as her ashes rise she wakes in the afterlife. In the Store's words, she "discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk". Game Director Ariel Lawrence puts it plainly: "Faye is dead and she finds herself in the afterlife of the gods," and she wants to go back to help Kratos and Atreus (Game Informer). The clip is IGN's upload of the Jun 2, 2026 gameplay reveal, from the pyre to her waking.

She fights faster than Kratos, with a sword in one hand and magic in the other, launching enemies into the air (Game Informer). Her golden palm can strike a foe hard enough to detach its soul, and a second weapon, the Serpent Bow, was shown on Sep 28, 2026 (PlayStation Blog). Two companions travel with her, the cube Phranque and the ribbons Rue, and two hostile gods are named, Sekhmet and Begtse. The full detail is on Laufey Gameplay and Combat; where the story sits is on Where Laufey Fits in the God of War Timeline. In the clip, from IGN's upload of the Jun 3, 2026 combat first look, Santa Monica Studio's designers explain the soul attack and the two companions.

Deborah Ann Woll as Faye

Woll gives Faye her voice and performance capture, and the character is modeled on her (Insider Gaming); she is known as Karen Page in Daredevil and Jessica Hamby in True Blood. She told CGMagazine she had known about the game "for nearly ten years", pitched to her in 2018, and summed up its themes as "This is a story about a parent. This is a story about regret." At San Diego Comic-Con on Jul 24, 2026 she said Faye is "very hard on herself" and that Kratos was the person who told her she was enough. More on her career is on Deborah Ann Woll.

What is not known

As of Nov 4, 2026 Santa Monica Studio has not said how Faye died, how long Laufey's story runs against the 2018 game, or how Kratos and Atreus appear in it. Christopher Judge is listed in the cast as Kratos on PlayStation's page, with no detail of his role. There are no hands-on previews or reviews yet.
