God of War TV Series

Prime Video's live-action God of War series, a two-season order run by Ronald D. Moore, adapts the Norse games with Dave Bautista as Kratos after Ryan Hurst was injured on set. As of Nov 4, 2026 it has no premiere date.

God of War is being made into a live-action series for Prime Video, with Dave Bautista as Kratos. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are making two seasons with PlayStation Productions and Ronald D. Moore's Tall Ship Productions, following Kratos and Atreus as they carry Faye's ashes, the story of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok. Ryan Hurst was cast as Kratos first and filmed from February until a torn bicep in June forced a recast; Bautista was confirmed on Aug 20, 2026. As of Nov 4, 2026 there is no premiere date.

When does the God of War series come out on Prime Video?

Not known. Amazon's own page says only that "Production is underway", with no premiere date or season length, and Variety reported that every scene filmed with Hurst must be reshot with Bautista. Any year seen elsewhere is a guess. The series is separate from the games: the next game is God of War Laufey, due on PS5 on May 20, 2027.

Who plays Kratos?

Dave Bautista. Hurst, who voiced Thor in Ragnarok, was announced as Kratos in Jan 2026, and Amazon released a first-look image of him with Callum Vinson's Atreus on Feb 27, 2026. In June he was injured on set; on Jul 17, 2026 Variety reported that Prime Video would recast Kratos. Hurst had torn a bicep and needed surgery that would have pushed production into 2027.

Variety reported Bautista in talks on Aug 3 and officially set on Aug 20, 2026. In September he said he had "Two More Months to Get to Where I Need to Be", and on Nov 1 he posted that he had gained 20 pounds for the role. Christopher Judge, Kratos in the games, is not in the series; see Christopher Judge.

Alastair Duncan is the one actor carried over from the games: he voiced Mimir in both Norse games. Faye, the hero of God of War Laufey, has not been cast as of Nov 4, 2026. The game characters behind these roles are on God of War Characters and Odin and Thor.

What is the series about?

The logline Variety printed: Kratos and Atreus "embark on a journey to spread the ashes" of their wife and mother, Faye. The official character note for Kratos reads "Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature." Amazon says the two seasons cover the story of the last two games.

Who makes it?

Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind, Outlander) is writer, executive producer and showrunner. Executive producers include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar and PlayStation's Hermen Hulst, as Amazon's page lists them. Frederick E. O. Toye (Shogun, The Boys) directs the first two episodes.
